SBS Handicap 2019 concluded Friday 6th Dec 2019. Followed by the annual dinner at the Falcon in Long Whatton.
First on court was lyndon Kennedy, the only surviving negative handicap player on -8 , giving away a 19 point lead to Matthew Kibble who only needed 4 points a game. Matt got away to a cracking start in the first game taking the 1st point then levelling to 2 all much to Lyndon's amazement. He knew he had a fight on his hands. Despite a terrific fight back Lyndon lost the 1st 23-13 (15-5). But knowing what he had to do he took the 2nd conceding only 1 point winning 15-12. Game on then. It was not to be though. Matt getting 3 points early on, the writing was on the wall. Lyndon managed to erase his defict, but that was all. 15-0 to Matt. An agreement was made at the start between the players to play best of 3.
Consolation Plate: Winner: Matthew Kibble(+11) Runner Up Lyndon Kennedy (-8)
Jim Burton (+4 ) v Jason Mitchison (+11) in the plate proved to be the tussle of the night. Jason taking the 1st 15-10, Jim the 2nd 15/11 and then
the 3rd 15-13 it looked to be going Jim's way. But a terrific response from Jason winning the 4th 15-6, took the match into the 5th. At 13 all it could have been anybody's game but Jim came through 15-13.
Plate: Winner: Jim Burton (+4) Runner up:Jason Mithison (+11)
Septuagenarian, Ian Robertson (+11) who had got past the mighty Matthew Maclachlan in the semis, faced a tougher task against young Ed Purse (+8), through to the final by default. But with a much closer handicap to Ian's, Ian never really got into the game, the younger much sprightlier Ed, only allowing him 4 points in the entire match and he went down 15-12, 15-13, 15-12.
I really need some feed back on this year's event which was very disappointing in the number of games that were never played and having to chase players. If we are to continue this event then I need some indication that there is sufficient interest to warrant it.
Would running the tournament over 2 weekends prior to Finals night - say last 32 on a Saturday, followed by 2 x 16 on the Sunday and then by 3 x 8 and the semi-finals on the following Saturday and Sunday, be more agreeable.
following the matches 12 tournament players, Old Man Hardern and guest, Laurie,an old Kegworth member, proceeded to the Falcon for the annual dinner. Once again organised by Ian Robertson, who has been supporting the spirit built up in the club now for several years. So thanks to Ian. It was fitting that we had 2 senior members of the first team gracing the occasion Steve Franklin and our recent arrival this season, Joe Pygall. The food provided by the Falcon went down very well for the second time in recent years. A good choice Ian, and thanks to the Falcon staff.
On to the free draw, and we agreed prior to it, that as originally agreed all registered members of the draw should be considered.
The winners were Competition Bag: John Dennett - Back Pack: Luke Brown - Ladies Small Back Pack- Dan Keogh - a nice christmas prezzie for Mum Dan.
Our Chairman and League Organiser, Martin Killeen, presented the Outstanding Plate trophies to the 2 players both present at the dinner.
Plate: Winner: Jim Burton. Runner Up: Jason Mitchison.
The other trophies had been presented after the matches.
Many thanks to Karakal who sponsored the event.
We also as I had hoped beat last year's charity contribution raising £81 from the dinner participants and a total of £442 for The Rainbows Childrens charity in Loughborough.
